Review:

Pulse by HJ Daly was an interesting read.  The blend of paranormal, science fiction, and through in a little bit of dystopian society as well, you have the makings of a very entertaining read.  From the first moment you are introduced to Esa, a young girl who is struggling to make it in the world she lives in.
Our world has changed dramatically in this novel, as an EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) has destroyed the world’s power supplies.  As the inhabitants try to come back from this catastrophic change to Earth, the EMP also has another effect: it makes aware to the humans another realm that has coexisted beside our own, but unknown to us all.  This realm is a realm of magic, where the creatures of human fairy tales actually live.  Elves, goblins, sorcerers, and more, they are real, and now there is a way to cross from one realm to the next.
Esa, who fights for her survival every day in the barren landscape of Earth finds herself befriended by a spinner by the name of Rootu.  The interactions between this two are at times hilarious, heart-wrenching and awe-inspiring all at the same time.  Together, these two must band together with others to change the world and stop a sorcerer, but the question is, can they do it?  Can they learn to trust each other, rely on each other, and even understand one another?  These questions and more can only be answered in the pages of HJ Daly’s novel.  I thoroughly enjoyed the journey from realm to realm that the author took me on.  I could feel and relate to the characters’ pain and suffering.  My heart would race with the fights that they would get into and melt a little when Esa and Rootu seemed to connect on a deeper level.
I think that this author has a potential hit on their hands.  I will admit that there were times where I was confused as to what was going on, but by the time I had moved further into the novel, questions had been answered and all was made clear again.  I cannot wait to see what else this author will come up with next.  I know that it will be entertaining and guaranteed to keep me guessing until the end.
Happy Reading!

Excerpt:
“Amy,” he screamed, yet she heard nothing, busy with her own fight. Blood boiled; hate seeping from his very core as he fought to reach her, to stop her. Cutting, slashing, destroying anything that stood in his path he moved inch by inch toward Amy and away from Esa. She no longer carried her staff, but swung a sword this way and that, slicing arms and legs as she turned full circle. He watched as she disarmed an elf and pushed him to the floor. Raising her sword she prepared to strike, but her sword clashed against steel as Thomas finally reached her.
“So you found her,” she said, nodding in Esa’s direction. “Eventually. Shame you weren’t a little quicker.” He said nothing because of the bile building inside his mouth and he spat at her feet.
“Did she show you my handy work?” She jabbed at his chest and he brushed it to one side before returning the strike.
“I’ve seen what you did.” Each word stuck in his throat.
“Good, nice to know. And our conversation was so stimulating, isn’t it a shame you can’t see the mental scars.” A sneer appeared on her face.
Unable to speak he lunged forward, in his anger he mistimed his strike. She moved to her left and drove the sword into his side. He staggered back a few paces, his hand reaching for the wound before recovering.
“What did you do?” he yelled as he charged forward.
“That girl’s very brave,” she managed to say as a rain of blows pushed her back. “But it’s not me you should be worrying about. He has plans for her.”
“What does he want with her?” he yelled.
“It’s going to mean her death, but not before he has his fun.”
“He’ll never get close enough, I won’t allow it.” His sword brushed her arm and she jumped back, bumping into a gorell.
Smiling she added, “It’s not up to you, I think you’ll be a little busy.” She pushed the gorell before her, but Thomas stuck the sword deep into the creature’s chest as it took a step forward. Struggling to pull the sword out he felt another jab, this time in his arm.
He only had one thought in his mind and that was to kill this human. The one who had caused Esa so much pain, left her battered and dying. There was no way she could know that Esa would heal. Charging forward, the anger giving him the strength, he lunged for her. She tripped over a fallen goblin as she staggered back. Unable to keep her feet she fell, losing her sword as she did.
“You can’t do this. I can tell you what he’s going to do. I could tell you how to stop him.”
“I don’t care, he can’t have her.” The tip of his sword rested at her throat.
“If you don’t spare me they’ll be no way to save her. She’ll die.”
    “Not before you.”
